In carriage of goods by sea, it is an implied warranty in common law that shipowners shall ensure that their vessels will not deviate unjustifiably from customary route. According to the late William Tetley (1927 - 2014), an unjustifiable deviation may constitute a "fundamental breach" of the charterparty in question.
