The birth of Ship Security Officer (SSO) originated from the 9-11 incident leading to IMO's enactment of the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS Code). It is a legal role that company (the meaning of company in this context shall follow the ISPS Code's definition) shall designate aboard merchant vessels. Before becoming an SSO, those designates shall be trained in the SSO Course.
